Fallschirmjaegergewehr 42/I (FG42) was a cross between automatic rifle and light machine gun that provided German Fallschirmjgers weapon they had never seen before. Luftwaffe's requirements included compact size (for transport inside planes), sufficiently durable, semi&full automatic, weight no more than standard rifle, and capablilities for hand-to-hand fighting, grenade launching and sniping.
