The MG42 had a very quick method of changing the barrel, a lever on the right-hand side near the breech was pulled back and it disconnected the barrel so it protruded out of the side of the shroud, it could then be easily extracted and a new barrel inserted. This operation was accomplished in 3 to 7 seconds depending on the experience of the operator, the barrel and whole lock assembly could be changed in 25 seconds.
